The official start of the 2007 Tour began with a visit to the Charlesworth China office in Beijing, where approximately 170 members of the Charlesworth China workforce are located. From there, the group explored the Beijing International Book Fair in their free time at their own pace. The remainder of the first few days in Beijing was spent attending seminars and meetings with important contacts in the academic community, a highlight being the Chinese Academy of Science seminar.
Other academic visits on the agenda included Peking University, Higher Education Press and CNPIEC. On day five, the group moved on from Beijing to Shanghai where they visited the Shanghai World Publishing Company and the Shanghai Information Centre for Life Sciences. The Tour was rounded off with a meeting at the Shanghai Library where our VIP delegates were introduced to the library director, Dr. Wu Jianzhong. There followed a relaxed afternoon and evening before a visit to the Shanghai Museum.
An eventful and enjoyable week was brought to a close with a night time boat ride along the Huangpu River, famous for its fantastic views of several trademark buildings including the Oriental Pearl Tower in the Bund Pudong financial district. All members of the group agreed that they thoroughly enjoyed the Charlesworth China Tour and commented on how much it helped them understand the potential opportunities available to Western publishers.
Many of the delegates indicated they would attend again or recommend the Tour to colleagues. The group bonded so well that reunions have already taken place! This illustrates further how very useful the Tour can be in forging relationships with not only the Chinese academic community but also amongst members of the international publishing community.
