AutoProof - European Respiratory Society (ERS)

As a client of Charlesworth for over a decade, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) originally followed a traditional pagination / proofing workflow. More recently they looked to Charlesworth to make their editing and typesetting processes faster and more efficient for producing the 4600 pages in the three journal titles published by ERS per annum, all of varying styles.

ERS styles work well with an AutoProof workflow incorporating a pre-process function to clean up pages prior to editing. Through our unique automated workflow, ERS benefit from,

  • Reduction in time to first proof to authors
  • Reduction in copy-edit time and repetitive tasks normally carried out at pre-process
  • Standardisation and conformance to style dictated by XML-first workflow requirements
  • Cost reduction through automation
  • Integration with Peer-Review system for automated delivery to production upon acceptance
  • Manual pagination still available if necessary

Example AutoProof Jobs

Elin Reeves, Scientific Publications Manager at ERS said of Charlesworth on the tenth anniversary of Charlesworth China being established,

The European Respiratory Society would like to congratulate the Charlesworth China operation on their 10-year anniversary. Although we have worked with Charlesworth for many years now, our relationship with the China team began in early 2006. Headed by Amanda Laverick, the team provides a fast, professional typesetting service for our Society's journals. We are also working with the publishing services team to increase our journals' visibility in this region. We look forward to working with Charlesworth over the years to come and the developments this will bring.

AutoProof - Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES)

The work we do for a new international, scientific open-access journal, the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES) is great example of how AutoProof can be used in production workflows and could help you save on your costs and reduce publishing schedules at the same time.

Charlesworth is responsible for typesetting and the provision of the XML conversion and management for this online only journal. Charlesworth worked with JAMES on the design and set up of the new publication. The work is done through our AutoProof system, an ideal workflow solution for online and open-access journals using the OJS peer review system.

The JAMES Editorial Office and publisher, the Institute of Global Environment and Society, worked closely with Charlesworth to develop a production workflow that includes author proofing, copy-editing, and final articles typeset in high quality PDF and HTML formats for online publication. Both formats include rich article metadata, PDFs are encoded with the latest XMP technology, and fully descriptive HTML. Both also include hyperlinks to cited articles via the CrossRef DOI database.

Rodger Ames, Technical Director at JAMES said,

We look forward to a continued relationship with Charlesworth in years to come. The Charlesworth Group state-of-the-art automated workflow will allow JAMES to provide its authors high quality publication services at costs that rival competing print journals, while also providing rapid submission to publication turnaround times that traditional journals simply cannot beat.

In summary AutoProof benefits include...

eBooks - National Association of School Psychologists (NASP)

Numerous NASP eBook projects have now been completed by the Charlesworth team. The books were typeset and produced for both print and online use.

During a two year period working with NASP , Charlesworth has developed AutoProof based workflows with them to help increase their speed of publishing using XML and 3b2 templated solutions. Additionally, Charlesworth also undertake the preprocessing work to clean up the Word files before doing the editing, reducing client workload.

Linda Morgan, Production Director at NASP said,

I thoroughly enjoy the business relationship that we have with Charlesworth. I communicate directly with staff in China and US offices and truly believe they all care about my work and strive to produce the best product that they can deliver. I am excited about the opportunity to further develop our workflows, and the time and cost savings Charlesworth's technology can offer us.

XMP Semantically Enriched PDFs - Nature Publishing Group (NPG)

A substantial project to incorporate eXtensible Metadata Platform (XMP) metadata within online PDFs has been completed for the leading science journal Nature.

This development improves the archiving of new Nature content and allows easier, more accurate searching for research articles, providing a better service for users of the nature.com web site. As XMP metadata is now embedded in all new Nature research articles as they are published, this technology will 'future proof' the PDFs for use in new web applications being developed for the semantic web.

In a collaborative project with NPG, Charlesworth's development team created a tailored workflow solution to handle the work. The resulting bespoke system of automated batch processing extracts information from XML files and produces standardised, validated PDF files with the XMP metadata embedded.

Technically, XMP supports the embedding of metadata within PDF files, providing a standards-based structure for meaningful information. Article titles, author details, searchable keywords, copyright information and subject matter can all be embedded within the PDF in a format which is not only human-readable but can also be understood by software applications. Since the standard is extensible, users can also add their own custom metadata.

Tony Hammond, Applications Architect for nature.com said of the development,

With XMP all manner of scholarly content - documents, images and other media types - can be properly labelled and applications can directly profit from the rich descriptions bundled with the media.

We now have a complete bibliographic record (including DOI) embedded in our PDFs using XMP structured markup. And, moreover, we also have a solid foundation for adding in additional metadata elements as our needs develop.

Howard Ratner, Chief Technology Officer, NPG added,

We have worked very closely with the development team at Charlesworth and are delighted with the outcome. Enriching our content with metadata at the typesetting stage is a natural fit.

Marketing in China & Pharma Reprints - Mayo Clinic Proceedings & Dowden Health

High profile publishers Mayo Clinic Proceedings and their publishing partner Dowden Health signed an Agency Agreement with Charlesworth in 2009.

Under the three-year deal, Charlesworth provide comprehensive marketing in China covering online, print and low-cost print agreements with consortia, national buying agencies and individual academic institutions, together with management and support through our US office.

In addition, Charlesworth also produce article reprints from the publication to sell to pharmaceutical companies in China.

Ann Sullivan, Executive Editor at Mayo Clinic Proceedings, said

Our collaboration with The Charlesworth Group is seminal in expanding the readership of Mayo Clinic Proceedings in China, in encouraging high-quality submissions by Chinese authors, and in ensuring that we become full participants in the global scientific dialogue.

Clinical medical publishers such as Mayo Clinic Proceedings and Dowden Health can achieve new revenue from their existing content in the expanding Chinese market. Charlesworth China reproduces branded reprints of published articles relating to pharmaceutical products from our clients' medical journals, and sells them to pharmaceutical and medical device companies. These companies then use this information to validate the effectiveness of their products, build their brand name and reputation with the medical profession, ultimately to sell their products.

Charlesworth oversee the whole process. We control the printing, translation, distribution and assure quality.

With offices in the UK, China, and USA, we have a local and global support network.
